10 Interesting things about Clovelly
1. Clovelly is a small village in the Torridge district of Devon, England. It has a harbour and is a tourist attraction notable for its steep pedestrianised cobbled main street, donkeys and views over the Bristol Channel.
2. The secluded, picture-postcard fishing village of Clovelly clings to the steep cliff sides on the north Devon coast was acquired by the Hamlyn family in 1738.
3. Today the Clovelly Estate Company owns all of the buildings in the village and much of the land around it.
4. About 250 years ago it was the home of Kate, the wife of a fisherman who used to fish out of Clovelly.
5. The doorways in the houses are about 5ft tall so don't forget to duck!
6. The herring fishing industry was once the staple industry of Clovelly, dating back to Elizabethan times.
7. During the 1830's the fishing industry started to decline, but by the mid 19th Century another industry was starting to emerge - tourism.
8. Look out for Clovelly Dykes on the plateau above the village - this ancient earthworks dates back to the Romans and some experts believe it has its roots in the Stone Age.
9. The village is traffic free. No parking except at the top of the village in the visitor centre car park.
10. Located midway between Westward Ho! and Bude on the north Devon coast. Five minutes drive from the A39. Turn off at Clovelly Cross and follow the signs for Clovelly.
